Intermodal containers are primarily used to store and transport materials and products efficiently and securely in the global containerized intermodal freight transport system, but smaller numbers are in regional use as well. These containers are known under a number of names, such as simply container, cargo or freight container, ISO container, shipping, sea or ocean container.

Intermodal containers exist in many types and a number of standardized sizes. Weights and dimensions of the most common types of containers are given below.

20 foot standard container (20′ DC)

Standard containers are mainly used as 20′ and 40′ containers. Containers are used for all types general cargo (dry cargo).

40 foot high cube container (40′ HC)

High-cube containers are used for all types general cargo (dry cargo). However, they are particularly suitable for transporting light, voluminous cargoes and overheight cargoes up to a maximum of 2.70 m tall.

20 foot Open Top container (20′ OT)

20’ and 40’ Open-top containers are used for all types of general cargo (dry cargo). Their principal uses are as follows: packing and unpacking from above or through the doors by crane or crab; tall cargo.
